Smoke on Stench 100 — encaustic tile

Edition of 5

Some tiles are commissions, some are experiments and some are pure, industrial‑strength mischief. This one falls firmly into the last category.

About the tile

  • Title: Smoke on Stench 100

  • Material: Impressed clay body with inlaid coloured clays and fired encaustic surface

  • Edition: limited run — each tile individually finished, slight variations are part of the charm

To mark the centenary of Stoke‑on‑Trent’s city status I wanted to honour the Potteries’ heritage… with a wink. Smoke on Stench 100 features a proud bottle oven stamped “100”, surrounded by smoky, curling typography that reads Smoke on Stench. The letters billow like rising fumes, echoing the gritty skyline that made the city.

It’s not an insult. It’s shared history. Stoke’s soot was once Edinburgh’s Auld Reekie (Old Smokie); both cities earned their character in coal, chimneys and craft. This tile is a bit of ceramic banter between two places built on industry and invention — a celebration of grit, humour and smoky lineage.

Love the idea but want it personalised? I make bespoke tiles and limited collections — local landmarks, nicknames, inside jokes, coats of arms, or anything delightfully daft.

Please Note: All of our encaustic tiles are handmade using traditional techniques. This means you may see subtle variations in colour, texture, and pattern, along with small irregularities that reflect the maker’s hand. These are not defects, but natural characteristics of the craft; each tile is unique, with its own character and individuality. No two pieces will ever be exactly the same and this is part of what makes handcrafted encaustic tiles so special.
